Tuesdays: The Extraordinary Mundane

1. too much stuff     The mantra spinning through my mind as I pack, pack, pack for college. I’m ready to give it all away and figure it out as I go.

2. sweet potato fries     Tuesday has evolved into lunch day with Dad. It’s the day where I swoop in with my Toyota Camry named Cameron and rescue my father from the monotony and boredom thrilling work day. Trying new eateries or downing smoothies, we try to get a hold on the last few days together. It’s a sweet time celebrating the past, but a salty time mourning the goodbye. Just like sweet potato fries.

3. roommates     Here’s to my soon-to-be roommate. To the outlandish adventures we’re sure to have in room 201. To the nights we stay up way too late, the mornings we get up way to early, and the snowy afternoons we stay cooped up with our suite-mates. Here’s to a freshman year of community, of running, of close-quarters and a shared love for needtobreathe. May it be eternally focused, and Jesus-built.

4. encouragement cards     Rummaging through a forest’s worth of letters, cards, and memorabilia as I pack for college, I found three mission trips’ worth of “encouragement cards” (a tradition of writing down specific, personal encouragements to each teammate while on a mission trip through my church) from dear friends. Even now, one, two, three years after these cards were written for me, they have a powerful effect. They spoke truth and encouragement to me in Guatemala and they continue that now. These cards are one of the biggest lessons I learned through years of mission trips. They taught me how to talk directly to the heart of a person and point out the incredible strengths and gifts God has built in them, and how to challenge a person to work in their weaknesses for the glory of God. What’s more, is that among my community of friends who’ve learned this lesson along with me, this way of communicating has become so natural. This has had a beautiful, radical effect on the depth and realness of our friendships. I’m so very grateful.
