Tuesdays: The Extraordinary Mundane

1. sore muscles     Because the proof is in the pain. A positive correlation: the more I work, the more it hurts. And that’s  why it hurts so good. This love-hate relationship with working out runs deeper than I’d like to admit, but that I still go at it day after day tells me this is not even my strength anyway. And lately, it’s not even my joy either. So deeply nestled in a place in my heart I myself am still unearthing, the wonder of sore muscles goes far beyond the obvious, just like the pain. Just like the joy.

2. spontaneity     Receiving a a gift out of the blue in the mail this afternoon made my day. This beautiful act of spontaneous giving motivated me to seek out ways to spontaneously give to others throughout everyday–in kindness, prayer, love, encouragement, and intentionality. The freedom of spontaneity doesn’t exist in routine; it is the freedom found in the little things that are passed by in routine, the joy in the extraordinary, the love in showing someone they mean something.

3. chicken salad     One of life’s simple pleasures, a bring-a-smile-to-my-face, you-are-awesome, pick-me-up chicken salad sandwich of epic proportions has made it’s way into my school day thanks to a sweet friend. (: Even though one bite of it is to die for, the chicken salad sandwich this gem shares with me everyday points to an even better reason to die for. From this week onward, I know that the taste of chicken salad will recall memories of a friendship priceless in worth and measured in smiles.

4. belly laughs     Whether among a group of teammates, late at night with my best friend, in the car with my dad, or over the phone, belly laughs have to be one of my all-time favorite “thank you for inventing this, Jesus” things. I love the fall-down-roll-around laughs, the stifled-because-we’re-in-class laughs, the clapping, crying, snorting laughs, the one-look-and-burst-out laughs, and the “I-just-saw-that-too” laughs. The fact that we as humans have the ability to laugh and share in that joy testifies to the vast grace of God–that He would create us with this in mind convicts me to laugh even more.

1. too much stuff     The mantra spinning through my mind as I pack, pack, pack for college. I’m ready to give it all away and figure it...
