Tuesdays: The Extraordinary Mundane

1. sunburn     The feeling of the first sunburn of the season is always my favorite because it means that for the most part, the cold has passed. The cold has passed and scorching, sweaty, sunny, simple, summer days are on the rise. Summer workouts that sweat out as many calories as I run off are coming. Warm nights under the stars are coming. Hours Eno-ing in shady forests are coming. Long nights inside over textbooks are ending.

2. failure     I failed completely bombed an economics test today. Rather than take this with my usual, “I’m-such-a-failure”, “how-will-I-get-through-college”, “this-really-is-the-end-of-the-world” attitude, I laughed. A lot. My friends even commented on how joyful and laughter-filled I was. I simply chose not to get down about something that means literally nothing in the grand scheme of eternity. It rocked. Laughter beats loathing any day. And laughter is always a success.

3. 73     ….days until graduation. That is all.

4. doctors     Sitting in my sports doctor’s office today, I looked out the window at one of the richest cities in the country, at the medical equipment surrounding me, at the full water bottle in my hands and realized what an exception I am. What separates me from the poorest cities in the world, the most disease-ridden and destitute people, the villages without a source of clean water? A language? A plane ticket? An education? I can’t un-know things, but I can act on them.
